@LizziB I have not tried Papaya leaf. The only thing in terms of diet I have found to help is to avoid alcohol and to decrease or avoid refined sugar. My platelets still drop but it seems not as much. My low platelets are due to auto-immune disease. My doctor however says there is nothing in terms of diet that helps. thanks, Lynette

Hi @Mjconley
This is such a great question that I think many other members would be interested in. I am going to tag a few other members who may have some experience or thoughts on this particular topic:
@KateMJ @LizM87 @Jennifer061277 @j3nn1f3r @BevSpicer @SueAleman @Cgravesrn @Pamcox @Bren196 @lynbartelt @Geeisme @MD.ShahAlam @gashtabulab1949 @sophiejane @riggulator247 @Juliekitchen
Have you tried papaya leaf? Did it help? Or any other natural treatment? Has your doctor clued you in on why platelets are low?
Take care,
Lizzi

@lynbartelt thank you! I am starting to try papaya leaf extract so I will let you all know if it helps. I haven’t eaten refined sugar in years (even before this diagnosis), and I only drink wine occasionally, so really don’t drink alcohol much at all, so I’m trying to find other means to limit the destruction of my platelets. Praying that this helps!! Thanks for your input!

@LizziB thanks for including others in this. I’m desperate at this point to find a reason and to find something that will help! Hoping this conversation will help others as well.

My husband cooks a lot of good fatty proteins and cooks a great ton of green vegetables.
I would suggest eating a lot of good fatty foods; like salmon. I would also suggest using alternative cooking oil; like olive oil and do more research on the foods/snacks that you need to avoid; like fast food, just decrease it and processed meats; like bacon and pepperoni. Try to decrease on sugar consumption, like pop and candy.
I myself, still eat the foods I need to avoid; but I have decreased on consuming them. So far, my bruising has decreased; like I said, substantially. My husband checks me constantly for any new bruises and also counts them, before I was over 14 at a time. I am now down to about 6 or 8, it's a great improvement than what it was before.
As for a root cause, it could be many things involved. For me, I've had ITP since I was 4 years old; I believe that got a cold/flu and my immune system didn't reset correctly and I ended up developing ITP. Like I said, it could be many reasons; some people develop ITP and some doctors still don't know why or how some of their patients develop it. My doctors still haven't a clue on why or how I developed ITP.

@KateMJ thanks for this info. I actually already eat a very healthy Whole Foods diet- I can’t have gluten or dairy (sensitivity), so My diet consists mostly of meat and produce from a local farm and sockeye salmon that I get from the grocery store…. But, I just found out recently that it is most likely caused by mold toxicity for me. I just added the info in another comment on here. So far the treatments have been helping. Thanks again for this info!

Hi all, I wanted to provide some info on this. I was not satisfied with my doctor’s wait and see approach to my lowering platelets, so I saw an integrative health doctor and started questioning about mold toxicity… I had a feeling that our house had mold. There were two kinds of molds found in my urine and then we had a company come in and they found mold in the crawl space of our house. I have been taking natural treatments from my integrative doctor and my platelets have increased from 60K to 87K in the last few weeks since starting the treatment and since beginning mold remediation in our house. I hope this trend continues with my platelets and I hope this information helps you all as well. I have attached an image of an NIH study I found linking the two types of mold toxins that I have to significant platelet decrease. Again- I really hope this info helps you all find answers too! It could be something as overlooked as mold!

My ITP was caused by the Shingles virus. I also developed Graves Disease (hyperthyroid) as a result of the Shingles. I’m following the AIP diet (autoimmune protocol) and also excluding some foods (like seafood) that make Graves worse. The AIP diet seems to be helping my Graves but not really effecting the ITP. Thanks for the info on papaya leaf extract and also the link to mold. I see a naturopath so I will check out both of those for ITP.
Regarding Graves: I am taking Bugleweed extract and that, along with the AIP diet is definitely helping the Graves.

I only got good positive results by eating natural organic food. I avoided junk food and drinks.

An update: I started taking Papaya Leaf extract and my platelet count went from 29,000 to 34,000. Prior to this the count never went up unless I was taking steroids. However it is only one week’s worth of results so we still have to wait and see. I have severe ITP.
I get the extract on Etsy from the Red Cardinal Shop.
there is a National Institute of Health Case Study on the use of Papaya Leaf Extract. It is only a case study and not a randomized controlled trial. I’ll find it and post here. If you decide to try using it I would make sure that you do it under the care of a Naturopath.

I tried Papaya Leaf Extract twice. Each time it definitely increased my platelet count from the 30’s to the 60’s/70’s but both times it only lasted about 4-6 weeks. My type of ITP is a ‘destruction’ issue not a ‘production’ issue. In other words, the results of my bone marrow biopsy, showed that I make plenty of platelets and they are normal in size and shape. My issue is that my immune system, incorrectly assumes those platelets are something to be destroyed.
There are many causes of ITP, mine was from a bout with Shingles. And many people get ITP after a viral infection (any kind of viral infection). I’ll find the list of possible causes of ITP and post here.

And ITP can be caused by some medications and drinking quinine water but I’m sure your hematologist has probably ruled out all of these already.

Has anyone tried natural treatments for mild ITP? My platelets continue to drop each appointment, but I’m curious if there are natural treatments to prevent them from getting critically low. I’ve read that papaya leaf extract can help; has anyone tried this? Also, has anyone’s doctor figured out a root cause for this as well? Thanks!
