Migraine management is primarily medication-based and involves two main approaches:

  1. Acute treatment: This aims to reduce the severity and duration of a migraine episode. It should be taken as early as possible at the onset of symptoms. Medications such as anti-inflammatory drugs, analgesics, triptans, antiemetics, and gepants (CGRP receptor antagonists) are commonly used.
  2. Preventive treatment: Designed to reduce the frequency of episodes, this is prescribed for individuals who experience frequent, intense, or prolonged attacks or who overuse acute treatments.

In addition to medication, maintaining a balanced lifestyle and identifying triggers can improve migraine management. Medications are not always fully effective and may cause side effects, prompting interest in complementary natural approaches.

How can migraine be prevented naturally?

Adopt a balanced lifestyle

Stay hydrated: Drink at least 1.5 liters of water per day to avoid dehydration-related headaches. If dehydration occurs, drink one or two large glasses of water, rest in a quiet place, and allow the body to rehydrate.

Engage in moderate physical activity: Regular, moderate exercise can help prevent migraine. However, proper warm-up is essential to avoid exertion-induced migraine.

Practice relaxation techniques: Deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and mindfulness meditation can help reduce physical and mental tension, preventing migraine episodes.

Try cognitive-behavioral therapies (CBT): CBT and mindfulness-based stress reduction (MBSR) have shown benefits in managing migraine by addressing psychological and emotional triggers. While CBT has strong scientific support, further evidence is needed to confirm the effectiveness of MBSR for migraine.
