I'll be 80 years old on 4/18. I have emphysema due to stupidly smoking for 61 years before I quit. I'm on medication (Spiriva) and am pretty well controlled although sometimes I have difficulty breathing when lying down so I have to sit up in order to get a good breath. I am well aware that emphysema is a progressive disease even when being treated but, thanks to the breathing exercises given to me by my pulmonologist and some I have invented on my own that he has now passed on to his other patients, it's not progressing as quickly as he expected it to progress.

I recently had a chest x-ray after visiting my doctor because I am regularly experiencing a crushing sensation when I lie down in bed. It feels like my heart is in a vice, this is the best way to describe it. I received my results and was told I had Emphysema. There must be a mistake. I don’t have a cough and I have never smoked in my life, so i was in shock! I am 52 years old. My dad was a smoker. He died when I was 17. He had emphysema with smoking and pneumoconiosis with dust from coal mines. The doctor had mentioned the CT showed my cerebellum was small. Everything went downhill from there I lost my job because I was a liability. around 5 months ago I began to do a lot of research and came across Health Herbs Clinic The treatment is a miracle. I recovered significantly, after using the HERBAL FORMULA I purchased from healthherbsclinic, Going back to my farm work again gives me so much joy. The shortness of breath, and fatigue all disappeared. I recommend the Emphysema herbal formula for anyone out there with same condition. I was fortunate to have the loving support of my husband and family. I make it a point to appreciate every day!

@shelleyagrian Okay, I understand everything about your post except the comment about a small cerebellum. That's a part of the brain and I have no idea what it could possibly have to do with emphysema.

Am from Jordan, I was diagnosed with Emphysema (COPD) in 2013 and I have tried all possible means to get cured. I even visited a pulmonologist but to no avail, until I saw a post in a health forum about a herbal clinic from China that prepares herbal medicine to cure all kinds of diseases including COPD and Emphysema. At first, I doubted if it was real but decided to give it a try, when I contacted this herbal doctor via the website which I got an email from them, they sent me the Emphysema herbal formula through courier service, and when I received this herbal medicine they gave me step by step instructions on how to apply it. I applied it as instructed I was totally cured of COPD Emphysema within almost five months of usage. You can as well Contact them on www. multivitamincare .org

I have all the symptoms of emphysema and chronic bronchitis; chest tightness and back pain, coughing, shortness of breath when I exercise, and always tired. Overinflated lungs is all that shows on x-ray but I cannot get diagnosed with anything, and cannot get the right medication. My symptoms get worse when I go the city with the smog and near the ocean and gas heaters and cooking smells. So as you can imagine, everyone tells me it is in my head; definitely not. I have been perfectly fine up until 4 years ago when all this started. I don't know where to turn to next. I had bronchoscopy, CT chest scan, MRI of back (for the pain); my symptoms just are not getting better. I have seen 3 respiratory doctors and all say there is no cure, I cannot work out what's happening. I was checking on internet when i saw a forum were Ms Kathy wrote about Home of remedy herbal who cures all kind of disease so i had to contact this clinic on their email and purchased natural herbs from this shop

I was diagnosed with severe COPD and emphysema at 48. I had LVRS (lung volume reduction surgery) a year later, which I am forever grateful for it actually led me to [This comment has been moderated by an administrator]. I have read some of their stories online before using their natural herbal formula , I had very hard time breathing then, and even more so at night, it was so bad I can’t sleep. I get up with a tight chest that feels blocked and can’t breathe well at all,I was excused from normal life responsibilities but natural herbs really helped but sometimes I think is God prodigy that I was able to treat my Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease but the herbal formula has a big impact on my recovery because my lung condition has been fully reversed. They do things for me, and was too happy to comply with their service. This is an equitable way to get off your COPD emphysema.

I was extremely short of breath and constantly tired due to my Emphysema. I was advised to take Montair plus one tablet every night which would give me temporary relief and help my sleep. But I didn’t want to depend on tablet fully which only offers relief not cure. I slowly started Ayurveda, and was introduced to Natural Herbs Centre and their COPD Ayurveda Programme, my symptoms gradually diminished including my shortness of breath, wheezing and fatigue. Reach them at naturalherbscentre. com. I know I'll get negative comments but I’m sharing this perhaps someone is also looking at genuine alternative treatment. I can vouch for this Ayurvedic treatments but you still need to decide what works best for you. Sending prayers

I was diagnosed with COPD/Emphysema a little over 20 years ago when I had a lung collapse from 40 years of smoking. Leading up to the collapse, I suffered with acute bronchitis every 6 months that took me to urgent care for treatments. With the last one, I thought my trip to the ER for acute bronchitis would just be another round where I received breathing treatments, an x-ray and lecture on the dangers of smoking. When the x-ray was ready to review, the ER doctor brought me over to the viewing screen to show me that my right lung was completely collapsed and was pressing on my heart. That I would need to stay in the hospital for a week or two and needed to get the lung re-inflated. After 8 days in the hospital with the chest tube, morphine, steroids and heavy doses of antibiotics, I was released and a non-smoker. I wont go into the insertion of the chest tube nor the severe pain that caused.
Since then, I have experienced major exacerbations about once each 10 years that put me in the hospital for 3 or 4 days. Now with a total of about 6 chronic illnesses, 20 meds and 6 doctors, my COPD/Emphysema has been compounded with Asthma and Apnea. I pretty much stay on 2 to 3 liters of supplemental oxygen 24/7 to keep my oxygen saturation level at or above 90%. Without it, the saturation level drops to about 80 to 85%. Drops to about 80% with mild exertion.
Today with the total of 20 meds and various conditions, I take the duo-neb Nebulizer treatment 3 to 4 times daily, take the Trelegy daily, and have Prednisone on stand-by incase of an exacerbation. Over the past 20 years my doctors have had me on each of the various inhaler drugs. Luckily for me, the Medicare insurance that I have supplies the Trelegy at $0 co-pay starting this year.

Can we be prescribed anything for the anxiety caused by shortness of breath (dyspnea)?

In order to deal with any anxiety during sob episodes, I try to focus on an object while concentrating on deep breathing exercises until it's under control. Works well for me. I'm a firm believer in no more meds than absolutely necessary.

Hello members,
How are you today?
I thought I would open this discussion today to talk about emphysema!
For those who do not know, COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) is actually an umbrella term used to describe a group of lung conditions that block airflow and make it difficult to breathe. Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are the two most common conditions making up COPD.
Emphysema is a progressive disease of the lungs caused by over-inflation of the alveoli (air sacs in the lungs). So, a person with emphysema has COPD, but not everyone with COPD has emphysema.
So, what about you? When were you diagnosed with COPD or emphysema? How long have you had it? How are you doing today?
