I have had discussions with my wife and two boys about my illness. I have been very careful to tell them that it isn’t genetic and just because I have it doesn’t mean that they are going to have it.

@Adamschiffer Thank you for sharing! It can be a tough conversation, but it’s great that you’ve approached it so thoughtfully. If you don't mind sharing more, how did they respond when you first brought it up?

I’ve been diagnosed with SPMS for some 29 years. I’ve been married a little over 28 years and we have two boys together, a 26 year old and a 17 year old. I’ve been quite open about my health with them and tried to explain every symptom of MS I have and/or get.
I tell my kids that it isn’t genetic and they are not very likely to end up with MS. A little bit more likely because I have it than the average bear but it is still under 1% for them.

Hi @Adamschiffer,
Thank you for sharing your story. It’s great that you’ve been open and honest with your boys about your MS, it must bring some peace of mind to know that their risk is still very low. How have they responded to learning about your condition over the years?
Take care,

Hello everyone,
How are you doing today?
Talking to children about your health condition can be very difficult. You want to be honest, but it’s not always easy to find the right words or know how much to share.
How have you explained your illness to your children or younger family members? What tips do you have for discussing serious health topics in a way that’s age-appropriate and reassuring?
