Cleveland Clinic and John Hopkins Hospitals rank in the top for Urology. I do not know for sure about specifically for prostatectomy, but I would assume so. However, with that being said, I have heard some poor outcome stories regarding teaching hospitals - not specifically with prostatectomy, but I have friends who had orthopedic surgeries and they went bad at a teaching hospital and the surgeon who fixed the mistakes of other doctors - more than one of these doctors - said that at teaching hospitals it is common for students to be performing the surgery under the guidance of the surgeon, so one small mistake and it is too late. And in the operative report they do not even mention the mistake. I have seen it with friends. So I would just ask the doctor before a surgery if at a teaching hospital if it is him/her who would be doing the surgery or a student under his/her guidance... you want to know every thing.

Good point, and thank you
Johns Hopkins is a great hospital but also have heard these horror stories and have moved them off the list for removal of the prostate. I have narrowed the list to the following doctors I live in Dallas
Dr. Claus Robinson , UT Southwesten
Dr. Thomas Aherking, Univ California , Irvine
Any suggestions from anyone in the forum

Dr. Ahlering in Irvine California is at the top of the list. I believe he also does his surgeries now with the assistance of robotics.
Have you been in contact with his office? He does deal with patients from out of state, so it is not something rare to his office. As the above member mentioned... check Vitals and healthgrades for doctors... you will see Dr. Ahlering has great reviews!

Is removal and/or radiation better for small, slow growing, tumors in prostate?

I made the decision to have my proste removed and it was not an easy time... just as hard as finding out you had prostate cancer... I was advised by my doctors the surgery was the best option because of my age and the harmful affects of radiation longterm. For me, once I made the decision, I did have the peace of mind knowing that the actual cancer was "removed" instead of just treated... which, I guess, did give me some sense of comfort.
The biggest issue for me once the surgery was done and I was on the road to recovering was the effects it had on me emotionally/psychologically, which many people in my opinion overlook. I encourage anyone and everyone, when diagnosed with prostate cancer, before and after treatment and during, to seek psychological help... there is nothing wrong with it. Medications, counseling, and just talking about your feelings can help tremendously. Do not hold it all in and try to battle the anxiety and depression because this diagnosis will affect you, no matter how strong you may consider yourself to be.
The sexual effects treatment has on you will also affect you mentally, because your sexual ability and ability to have kids will likely be affected. Your performance ability can be likely fixed, but it can still affect you mentaly. Take care of yourself.
