Hello members,

I thought it would be an interesting discussion to discuss and see who smoked before their diagnosis, after their diagnosis, and who still presently smoke.

Did you smoke prior to diagnosis with lung cancer? Did you smoke after your diagnosis? Do you still smoke?

If you no longer smoke, feel free to share how you quit.

Used a vape for 4 years prior to surgery removing 40% of my r lung. Before Vaping I was a 2 pack a day smoker for 45 years.

I did smoke for about 15 years; years prior to that my smoking was basically limited to social events. I did vape, and do not vape tobacco anymore..

As you may already know, not all smokers end up with lung cancer, but it is by fare the leading cause of lung cancer cases (linked to 80% to 90% of cases).

What about you? Did you smoke before you were diagnosed? If so, for how long? Have you quit smoking since diagnosis? What have you done to cut down or quit entirely?

@Courtney_J Hi, I'm one of those rare cases of lung cancer in a non-smoker. I tried smoking once when I was younger but didn't like it.

Yup, I smoked for 20+ years and vaped for about 2 and a half. It was something I picked up as a young adult and never really put down except for when I was pregnant and when my kids were young. And even then I smoked at work so to not do it around them. I switcehd to the vape when they started getting popular with the idea that it'd help me quit. And then I got diagnosed.

@cancerdepulmon Wow that must have been a shock! I can't imagine. It's not like I "expected" to get lung cancer, but I think as a smoker you're always aware that it's a possibility.

My parents were also heavy smokers (who wasn't at the the time, the 50s and 60s?) so growing up with that probably didn't help me either

just diagnosed. Smoked for 20ish years about a oack a day. Quit 15 years ago.. feeling shitty and awful and almost ashamed of my cancer becauae it was something I brought on by stupid choices I made long ago.

I completely understand as I don’t have anyone to talk to also. I’m a widow & I live alone. My oldest son died in 2021 & my youngest son & his family live 3 hours. My father is dead & my mother has chronic back pain & is immobile. My younger sister lives with our mother & she is going through a divorce from her husband who abandoned her. My sister doesn’t visit me, help me, call me & rarely texts me. I have various cousins, a niece & nephew that are spread out in nearby states but are hours away from me. After I told my friends I had cancer, they quit contacting me. I have learned how to be my own care giver. It has been very difficult. I’ll admit I’ve been depressed, cried a lot, felt sorry for myself but I never gave up. I prayed & read my Bible everyday. Then I found cancer groups online like this one where I could share what I was going through & got empathetic responses. That really kept me going. I hope you find someone to talk to but I highly recommend the online cancer chat groups.
