@Saskia Hello Saskia, thank you for opening this discussion. I'm sorry to hear that your family isn't receptive to your diagnosis! Coping with a cancer diagnosis can be hard to process for both the patient and also their loved ones. Let me tag some members who can maybe share their experience or advice with you.
Hello everyone, how are you doing? How did you tell your family and friends about your NET diagnosis? How did they handle it? Were they supportive, or did they have a hard time handling it like Saskia's loved ones? Do you have any advice to share with Saskia? How can she let her family know that she needs support?

Take care,
Courtney

@Saskia It's interesting to see how different people react. It sounds like your family is/was a bit in denial. Maybe it's too hard for them to think about so they try to treat you like normal? It was really hard on my wife and family, but mostly to the point where they were smothering me a bit.

You're absolutely right about the denial especially my husband, but I've since heard from a friend that my son really worries about me! I felt bad but i had no idea i would prefer it if they talked to me then we could all understand, each other and the situation. Haha I'm laughing because the chances of my husband talking about this is not going to happen, I've tried! Ah well it is all part of life with cancer ..

@Saskia Ugh I had a similar situation with my parents. They were in complete denial, especially my mom. I think part of it may be dementia, but she was and has been completely flippant and almost cold. She didn't seem to comprehend the gravity of the situation. I wonder if it's a generational thing or just a "people" thing. Some people handle things differently? I guess it adds a little "color" to our world. It'd be too easy if we all just talked about things normally, right? 😂

I completely understand as I don’t have anyone to talk to also. I’m a widow & I live alone. My oldest son died in 2021 & my youngest son & his family live 3 hours. My father is dead & my mother has chronic back pain & is immobile. My younger sister lives with our mother & she is going through a divorce from her husband who abandoned her. My sister doesn’t visit me, help me, call me & rarely texts me. I have various cousins, a niece & nephew that are spread out in nearby states but are hours away from me. After I told my friends I had cancer, they quit contacting me. I have learned how to be my own care giver. It has been very difficult. I’ll admit I’ve been depressed, cried a lot, felt sorry for myself but I never gave up. I prayed & read my Bible everyday. Then I found cancer groups online like this one where I could share what I was going through & got empathetic responses. That really kept me going. I hope you find someone to talk to but I highly recommend the online cancer chat groups.

How do you cope when family and friends dont want to hear or acknowledge you have cancer because they cant handle the fact so when you have a bad day they ignore it and continue to treat you as if you were just fine! Let's go for a bike ride...when walking is hard enough to do on a good day, oh Good Afternoon! when you get up later than them because you are soo tired every day.
