Hi All. Glad I found this forum. I went to the doctor with pain on my right side under rib cage. I have been feeling like this for over 4 months now. Dr ordered blood work and ultrasound. Liver enzymes are fine the only thing the ultrasound found was a fatty liver. Since this diagnosis I have began a vegan whole foods diet and exercising daily. I am obese 250 5’9” but have already lost 15 lbs.
unfortunately I still feel this pain on my right side that seems to refer to leg and back.
will losing more weight and continuing my healthy routine relieve the pain?

Livers are both a gland and an organ. My transplant surgeon told me that livers are capable of regeneration. The hospital I was at for my transplant had not started in Living Donors for livers back in 2017, but they made advancements and it’s possible to take part of a liver from your living donor and replace the patient’s liver and both parties will be just fine, the liver will regenerate, and both will live long healthy lives.
Other organs that can use living donors are the kidney as your body can work just fine with just one and the same goes for lungs. I was shocked to find out both the donor and recipient could live with one lung.
Of course exercising and eating a well balanced diet will help, even if those practices just stop the liver from getting worse. Has your doctor recommended or brought up transplant surgery?

If I were you, I would try and find a specialist (hepatologist) for a second opinion. I dealt with chronic debilitating migraines from age 18-39. I had an emergency liver transplant and I had no idea I was sick. My doctors could not figure out why I had such horrible migraines every single day.
I collapsed at home and fell into a 4 day coma and was rushed to the closest hospital where they treated me for acetaminophen poisoning because I had been taking boat loads of Tylenol in between taking my abortive migraine meds to try to get my head to stop hurting. The first hospital noticed the acetaminophen treatment was not working and transferred me to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center where they do transplants. I was in a coma for 4 days and was on the top of the liver transplant donor list. After my transplant the hepatologist did a pathology test on my old liver. It was grey with nodules on it and she discovered my liver was 90% Non Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease and there was no way that it would have regenerated on its own. I never felt sick but in a picture taken one year before my transplant and another picture a year later, almost to the day, my dad took another picture when I was being released. Comparing the two pictures I was noticeably bloated in the face and extremely jaundiced. I have had any abdominal pain, but that could be because of the unbearable pain I was in due to my migraines to feel any other pain. I highly recommend seeing a liver specialist.

I was diagnosed with steatohepatitis 2 years ago. Main symptoms were bilirubin leaking into my bladder and a lovely condition called "hairy tongue."

@depressedme I am newly diagnosed with mild NAFLD but the pain in my side and fatigue really get me some days. I have a quite a bit of weight to lose so these symptoms don't help. Can you share a list of the "forbidden foods" with me? My dr said to lose weight but gave no information on what I should stay away from

For anyone dx with NAFLD or NASH or Fatty liver….get a liver biopsy asap!!!! This is the only way to know the extent of your disease. Fibrosis can’t be detected on any other test or scan. If your disease is advanced, go to the Mayo Clinic. So many doctors are idiots when it comes to this. Even being 20 lbs overweight can cause NASH cirrhosis.
