I would tell myself how important self-care is and how important it is to protect yourself from people who do not have your best interest in mind. When I was losing my health there were people in my support system that rooted for my demise and put unrealistic expectations in front of me. Though I managed to come out with the financial ability to retire very comfortably very early (in my 50's) I now deal with health issues that could have not been part of my life had I practiced self care and said NO when I really needed to. I ended up in a coma for 14 days.

Be careful and aware of where and what you work with and around. Had no clue about silica powder and certain degreasers. Probably the major causes of my lung problems

@Mark-IL I own a construction company. I worked 70-100 hours a week for 17 years. On the weekends my husband and I rehabbed houses that became our rental properties. Unfortunately a couple were former crack houses. So overworked, got pneumonia, kept going, insomnia set in hard, kept I, crack houses, plumbers glue, insulation, filthy, painting 10-14 hours straight. It all adds up.
I do wonder why I didn't put the breaks on and just get well. I also wonder where I would be if I had not created my own future?
I'm improving everyday. I know they say COPD is in curable, but I still do not believe I have COPD. I just got out of the shower after running for an hour this morning. Did 4.25 miles in 1 hour. How can that be possible with COPD?

To live in the now stop putting off that bucket list until “the time is right or when money is right” because now my health will not allow me to do many of those activities and many of my friends and family are gone slow down live in today… trust no one when your gut is telling you differently

@Nobighurry I did go to Grand Cayman this past February. I guess you can call it a vacation. I went alone. Stayed on 7 miles beach, but received stem cells at the Da vince Stem Cell facility on the island.

DO NOT START SMOKING (and that includes the new kid on the block - vaping), especially at a young age. I was 10 when I started smoking, quit at age 72, I'm now 83, and I was diagnosed to have emphysema when I was 76. Emphysema is classified as COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). For those of you who don't know, emphysema is a disease that's progressive even under treatment and I am under treatment with two medications. I also do breathing exercises which seem to be slowing the progression - at least that's what my pulmonologist tells me. I'm now at the point where I can't lie flat to sleep, I have to sit up to at least a 45-degree angle and even sometimes completely upright or I can't breathe. That does not make for restful sleep and I'm tired and sleepy during all my waking hours. It's pretty difficult to function and perform activities of daily living in that state and, to be 100% honest, if it weren't for my husband I'd have to pay someone to come in to help. As an example of how bad it is, I can't put a fitted sheet on my bed in one fell swoop because in order to put the sheet on I have to lift each corner of the heavy mattress in turn. So, I have to attach one corner and rest for at least 5 seconds (sometimes even up to 10 seconds on a bad day or even 20-30 seconds on a REALLY bad day) before I can attach another corner and so on. Sometimes I can't walk on a flat surface for more than 5-6 steps before I have to stop and rest. Stairs? Good luck with that! Up 3 steps is the most I can manage at a time and that's on a good day.

@uncleanatol I also have emphysema from 45 years of smoking. So far so good, but I truly understand how debilitating it can be with "ordinary" household chores, let alone walking and stairs. And I do live alone, which seems to be scarier and scarier for me.

@Selkie319 Yes, I can understand how scary it is because you live alone and have no backup. However, it can't be helped - it is what it is. If you end up in the same state I find myself in, wrestling with ADLs, if you can afford it hire a helper/housekeeper to help you at least two or three days a week. However, I know that they're ridiculously expensive and finding an efficient one is often a crap shoot. The best advice I can give you is to take things very slowly, rest when you have to even if it's only after a few seconds of activity. Also, you might think about giving up some of the things you're used to doing or find a way to do them differently. For instance, if you vacuumed your carpet or washed your floors every couple of days consider reducing that to once a week; if you already do them once a week, consider moving that to every 10 days to 2 weeks. If you like cooking, instead of standing at the counter to do prep, like cutting veggies, sit down at the table instead. Remember, if there's an easy way then take it, don't push yourself - you're not in the Olympics

Hello, One thing would be DO NOT WORK 2 JOBS. People with Lupus are overachievers, and I have learned the hard way. I had never rested enough. I had my son in a private school and the price was more than I could afford. I wanted to give him opportunities. I struggled but, I know--I did my best!!!
Don't do what I did!!! Stop yourself before it gets out of control.
Always Michele aka Mickey

Hi and thanks for starting question. Also hope all are well. I'd tell my younger self, life is Super Hard. Just keep plugging along and pray for better things. Or, if prayer isn't your choice, give them positive vibes. All will be well in the end.

Hello everyone,
How are you doing today? 😊
As we get older we have a lifetime of experiences that have made us wiser.
If you could give your younger self one piece of advice, what would it be?
Take care,
Somya from the Carenity team 🌼
