Hello
I'm new to this forum. I was adopted from Korea, so I know nothing about my biological family. I was diagnosed with Crohns in 2010 when I was 50. I am the only one of my adopted siblings to have this disease.

I’m the odd duck in my family. No autoimmune issues on either side dating back a couple generations.

I'm sorry you're the "odd duck". I don't think it all has to be genetically related. I never thought of Crohns being an auto immune disease.
When I was diagnosed in 2010, I was absolutely shocked, I never thought in a million years I'd ever get anything like this. I had heard of Crohns, but from what I heard about it, I knew it was something I didn't want to get, but now that I have it, I deal with it the best way I know how.

As far as I know, I'm the first one in the family with Crohns. However, I remember my grandmother always holding her right side and not feeling well. Not sure if she had diarrhea. I feel really super bad that my middle son has Crohns. So unfortunately, I believe he inherited it from me. My husband and daughter has ulcerative colitis.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's around five years ago. I am now 60. For the last three years things have finally improved to almost normal for me.
This year my little brother (aged 48) was diagnosed with a form of Crohn's that was so severe he lost 100 lbs off his frame of 275. He is 6'. Thank goodness he started out with excess lbs! He lives in a small town in Colorado where there is no advanced level of care so he went to Arizona's Mayo Clinic where he finally got the care he needs.

I was diagnosed with Crohn's in 1991. My older brother started having symptoms in 1993 and went to his doctor. His doctor says "Ever heard of Crohn's disease?". He was quite stunned. His is in a completely different place, and he has never needed surgery.

no one in my family had Crohn's disease or interstitial cystitis that I am aware of. however, my father had to have half of his stomach removed due to some form of bleeding ulcers and a lung removed due to asbestosis due to working conditions. he also had diverticulitis and later in life Parkinson's disease. my mother lost her battle with breast cancer at age 27. I was 4. I was misdiagnosed with uc when my colon perforated suddenly when I was 21, therefore, it was removed in 1988 and the remainder of the poop shoot a year later. I was in remission for about 5 years then diagnosed with Crohn's and have had multiple small intestinal blockages and abdominal surgeries over these last 32 years, while also diagnosed with several other autoimmune diseases. My only sibling, brother has always been healthy.

Hi all,
How are you today? I thought I would create this discussion as it may be interesting for us to share!
Both genetic and environmental factors have been found to play a role in the chances of developing Crohn's disease.
Have you found the same to be true within your family? Does anyone else in your family have Crohn's? Or are you the first to be diagnosed?
