Getting older with MS

Wow, this was an enlightening conversation for me. I was dx in 1986 with RRMS and abt. 16 years later SPMS was confirmed. I have felt so alone with my disease. The progression has restricted my activities and that includes those that I physically can’t do anymore as well as those that I struggle with emotionally. It’s challenging to find the joy in day to day living.

Unfortunately, my MS progression has accelerated over the years ( or at least the accumulated/compounded effect ) and it feels like a really scary, slippery slope ( Never an ideal situation for someone with balance issues ).

I wish I knew! I am off meds for six months because the side effects of the Tecfidera caused me problems of severe itching and a buzz like sensation around my head and ears and face. It also cause me to have 40 percent reading for the first time of JVC virus which can become problematic and the low white blood count. So I am now waiting for another MRI and another DMT, the doctor suggest possibly Avonex . Needle fatigue for me again. Since I was taken off the DMT my symptoms are awful and I am really having walking issues and balance issues, lots of spasms, pain and no energy to speak of.

The doctors don’t have answers. I have relapse remitting MS- I don’t take any medications for MS because I found they made me worse. When on the drug I became blind and paralyzed every 4 months like clockwork … I’d get better after a month or two and the cycle continued for years until I stopped taking their medications. Hello....I was diagnosed at age 40 & I'm 69 in October, so uou can see I've had several yrs of this. I have RRMS & started Avonex at age 42...here's my story about the subject. When I was 55 yrs old, my Dr offered the option of stopping the Avonex shots. He relapses generally stop in the 50yr old range. There was no change in my MRI's in 10 yrs & thought I would remain stable. However, he offered NO guarantees & that it was my choice. I said "HELL YES, I'LL STOP IT"!!!! Those needles were intramuscular & I hated giving myself the shots....so, I stopped the shots that very day. Ok, it's 14 years later & I just had new MRI's taken last year & still no change since my early 40's! That's my story about this...I think progressive MS might be different, But, I'm not cured...I still have all the disabilities that my first few exacerbations (they were doosies) left me with. They seem to worsen with age.anyway, I hope this helped!!
