@Twiggi that is what I thought too... that it was a federal law governing that. I will look more into it and seek out an attorney if need be. I appreciate all your help. Hope you are doing well.
I guess once you get disability, you can adjust your living expense accordingly in order to make sure disability is sufficient for what you need in itself.

@Twiggi Hello,
I am just reading these posts. My son is only 30, but has struggled for years. Severe UC at age 16, j-pouch at 20, never felt well with j-pouch - symptoms got worse - age 29- diagnosed with Crohns, developed a fistulas - seton still in place. Throughout those years - he developed insomnia, anxiety and depression. We decided he should try to get disability. Still waiting. He has to go see a ss doctor on January 9th. Do you have any suggestions for this visit?

I live in New Mexico but isn't SS a Fed program, the state we live in should not matter. I went to the SS office, I had an appointment to start collecting my retirement at 62, and it was right after my ostomy surgery, 30 days, and when I left the rehab I had lost like 50 lbs. was barely alive according to the doctors. When I applied for my SS retirement, I also applied for disability, I was in a wheelchair, and could hardly keep my head up I was so weak. They told me that I could only get one or the other, not both SS and disability. I don't think that was right, as I know several people who get both SSI and SSDI, I am getting a reduced amount first due to early retirement, and also because she said they are running out of money, and have had to cut everyone's amount by 20 %. I get only $840.00 a month to live on, which I can, but I am due to receive 1400, or 1200 with early retirement. I do know some people who are getting their early age 62 benifits, instead of 65 full retirements, they are getting 1300 monthly and they didn't work any more than I did, or pay in any more than me, why is it that the employees of SS are able to make up the amounts it seems as they see fit, and then we are stuck getting that amount. she also said my disability would only be 700 a month if I wanted that instead. So I guess she meant I am qualified but can only collect one or the other? She was acting like it was her money that she was going to be giving me, not my money due me, that I put in for the last 50+ years of working. If I didn't have some good friends that allow me to work for rent and had a decent ride for a fair price I would be living a lot lower than I am. The covid stimulus checks have helped me a lot. I just spend my 2nd ck. I am in good enough shape to try to work some but only as a sitdown job for only around 4 hours a day.

I applied for Disability it took over 2 years to get. Went to an attorney . He filled out all the paperwork, Make sure you are going to the Dr’s so there is a good documentation. Make sure your dr. Puts in good notes. My dr filled out a form letter, basically said that I could be gone from work 2 to 3 days a week. Since I wasn’t working there wasn’t an employer that would accommodate and I would have to be at job for at least a year to get fmla. Be patient let your lawyer do the work .

I have filed 5 times since 2010! Denied all times! I have more then Crohn's disease wrong! The state of West Virginia told me to adjust my work skills! I just filed a dispute for this last time! I can not stand for to long or sit for to long from degenerative disc disease! I have anxiety and depression! My right vocal box is paralyzed, i have pcos, among a # of other things wrong! I never know when I will end up in the hospital. There is not a job out there that will accommodate my time off, or unscheduled absences, bath room break that can't be held. Idk I will just have to wait and see what they say this time.

I am in the second year of applying for disability. The system is set up for failure. I was denied my claim then I found Atticus. They connected me to a disability law firm and they have been phenomenal. I had my hearing March 14 and I'm waiting for the formal decision. My lawyer said he's 99.9% sure I will be approved. You need to have consistent medical records to prove your claim and it's very frustrating and time consuming but it's worth it. Obtain a good lawyer. They know how the SSD system works and help with all the paperwork. Good luck and I'm sorry you're struggling. I've had Crohn's for 32 years.

two months ago I went into the Social Security office and filled out a ton of paperwork to apply for disability. Within a month of doing that I received a letter in the mail explaining that Crohn’s disease should not prevent me from being able to hold a job down. Every job I’ve had I’ve lost due to too many absences, surgeries and emergency room visits. Has anyone successfully gotten on disability and if so did you use a lawyer?
