Hello, In my experience, changing dietary habits is tough, especially in our current food environment. I had pre-diabetes a few years ago and was able to improve this with changes in my diet but it took time and lots of trial and error. What are the barriers that many of you face in trying to improve your dietary habits (lack of time ect)? Do you find it hard to figure out what is diabetes friendly when shopping at the grocery store? Thank you all for sharing your individual stories and struggles.

I've been handling my diabetes issues on my own, as far as the wear and tear of the constant food monitoring, giving myself shots, checking glucose levels. I have a lady friend that I talk to but there's nobody in my life right now that I can talk to who understands what I'm saying. The biggest challenge for me has been a depressing spirit that seems to never go away. There's so many things that go with this disease that you would never have thought of. After so many hospital trips and bad news it's hard to keep a hopeful outlook. At least, that's the way it's been for me.

Eating patterns: One of my friends has Type 2 diabetes and loves sweets a lot. However, eating raises blood sugar levels.

Multiple things:
- I don't tell anybody I have T2 directly. I just say I have some diseases (I have more than one, apparently). The most common reply is "Why don't you go see a doctor?" People are ignorant, but I'm over it.
- Mid-day, every single day, I get exhausted. I've passed out / fallen asleep in classes, while riding a bike on a long bike tour, at my desk almost once or twice a week. If I could fix this alone, it would be a major win. I've gone to the sleep lab and they said "you snore". The medical angle is useless, if you ask me.
- Feeling like I have the flu, all the time. I need to be alert and applicable. I work for myself because I can't keep any position falling asleep, without parading my bad health to a company. They simply won't understand either, and it simply has little potential. I also need to work on my own work goals, and that is difficult when I'm always asleep.
- Due to all this, and the very reason I'm here in this forum, is because I am being mentally drained with all this. I can't talk to anybody about it, and it's a massive burden that leaves me helpless a lot of the time.
- I'm finding the Diabetes support to be almost comical. Websites laden with smiley images and mottos like "Oh we really really care." but little to no resources for dealing with the mental health aspects of a debilitating disease. Lots of donations, education programs, and a slew of staff that won't go near alternative approaches like vegetarianism. I'm a microbiologist/immunologist/biochemist that's been failed by the system, and I find these groups almost insulting with their Disney style 'support'. I'm an adult man in my 50s. I'm not going to a summer camp, and my condition doesn't allow me to volunteer time, nor be employed in a regular schedule.

@daBee3 Ugh, I so hear you on this. I am 59 and was diagnosed with type 2 at 26. My medication regime has changed over the years but none of my healthcare providers have ever asked about the mental toll it takes. I had terrible side effects with Trulicity but my doctor didn't really believe me. Whatever, I stopped taking it. At my therapist's recommendation, I came here because I don't need platitudes, I need realistic suggestions and support.

Hello all,
How are you doing?
Type 2 diabetes, like most chronic conditions, can challenge aspects of life or make one feel frustrated. I thought today we could talk about those challenges.
What is the most difficult or frustrating aspect of living with type 2 diabetes? Is it related to your diabetes care and management, or is it related to something external? Is it the lack of support or understanding from others, the need to closely monitor blood sugar levels, the need to watch weight and diet? Feel free to share here!
