Wow! You really got with it! You should be proud of yourself. You are definitely on the right track and at 5.6 A1c already out of the prediabetic range. Foods to especially be careful with are what we call the "whites"; bread, pasta, rice, potatoes. cereals and processed foods. They're simple starches and will give fast rise to your bg.
Post meal spike depends on how much and what you eat. Being sure to include some protein and fat will slow digestion a little and help to keep that spike a little more in control.
If you find yourself going hypo, drink some juice or a half can of regular soda or keep some simple fast acting carbs close by. The rule is 15/15; eat about 15 grams of fast acting carbs, wait 15 minutes and test again. Your bg should rise. If it isn't,then try again. If you cannot get the bg back up after a few tries, get to an ER.
Check out "dawn phenomenon" for an explanation of why your numbers are higher than you would like in the morning. It's normal. Good Luck!

@suecsdy thank you soooo much for your kind reply! I am so thankful for finding this site and reading your response. You helped ease my mind.
Is it fat or protein that helps slow digestion and hinder the post - meal spike?
I have also read that I should stay away from bread entirely... even wheat and whole grain because it is just all processed anyways in the United States and all has the type of of carbs that will spike my BG... is this true from your personal experience?
I am so thankful for the Hypo information too! Make sense and telling me how to test and retest makes complete sense... you are amazing @suecsdy

Hi everyone,
I am a 30 year old male, and have recently found out that I am pre-diabetic and if I do not get things under control it can become bad! I have lost about 20 pounds recently (I started trying to get healtheir even before I initially got the diagnosis) and am currently around 225 pounds.
However, I am still getting used to eveyrthing that comes with diabetes and the doctor did not explain much, except eat healthier, watch my sugar intakes, no more late night snacks, get my rest, and exercise 4-5 days a week.
I am working on a low carb diet currently. I also invested in the Libre to monitor my BG. I am still getting an understanding of all the numbers and a friend is helping me, but I wanted to reach out and see if anyone can better assist me .
am still I started reading about insulin resistance and metabolic syndrome after I borrowed a friend's meter and checked by BG after a heavy pizza meal, only to see a reading of 220mg/dl. That got the alarm bells ringing, so in the last 9 months I adopted a low carb diet, lost about 20kg. My blood readings last month were
Fasting: 102mg/dl
HbA1C: 5.6%
Triglyceride: 82
Total Chol: 182
LDL: 148
HDL: 36
Can anyone help me with how I can keep my BG frmo rising in the morning?
Does anyone have any advice on how to limit the post-meal spike? and how to limit the drop in BG from going into hypo?
I am open and appreciative of any and all help!
