@Peggy1 Hello Peggy1, thank you for opening up a new discussion. The keto diet seems to be a popular subject across many of our forums!
Hello members, I hope you don't mind that I'm tagging you. Do any of you have any information or experiences to share on the keto diet in the context of diabetes?

I do not have anything on this. I follow a strict diet daily. I dont call it Keto or any other name. This diet I follow works for my body and my lifestyle. I al we ays say to follow your own diet. No diet is in tune for you personally. Find a comfortable number of carbs, fats, protein etc.. Only your body will know what's right for you.

I have only recently been diagnosed with t2 diabetes, although I have been pre-diabetic for many years as well as overweight. I followed a "keto" like diet in my late 20's. I stayed on diet for about 9 months and lost about 35 lbs. My doctor expected me to lose twice that. I limited my calories to 800 and my carbs to 20 gm. Anytime I ate more than these I would no longer be in ketoacidosis and would get sick trying to reduce carbs back down to 20 gm. I was not hungry on this way of eating, but I was very bored. I began to have several health problems and I eventually went off diet. I consequently gained back the 35lbs. and more. I had many new allergies, and ached all over. It was several years later that I was diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and asthma. I worked 10 more years after diagnosis and have been retired for 25 years. A wonderful puppy came into my life about 5 years after I retired and I began to walk with him to get some of his energy out, and I began to get better also. My doctor had been trying to tell me to "get moving" but I thought he was crazy.

@Marybeth Wow only 800 calories?! That's crazy! And you weren't hungry at all? I think I'd turn into a monster if I tried this diet. So you wouldn't recommend it? Maybe we should all just get puppies, that'll keep us busy and moving!

I have a friend who also has diabetes who tried this and it really worked for him. I haven't been brave enough to try it yet. If I'm not mistaken the point of it is to get your body into "ketosis" where your body burns fat for energy really efficiently. I think there are a few different types. I'd be interested in hearing about other people's experiences with it as well!

Is this a good diet to follow? ,Healthy diet? Seems like it would be very stressful to maintain.
